GLOBE Science Fair
Practical information
Each year we organise and host the GLOBE Science Fair where students present the results of their research efforts! On this page you can find more information about participation and preparation.
- When? June 9th 2023
- Where? Wageningen University & Research
- Who? Each school can send one team of 3 to 5 students (level H/V 4/5) with 1 to 2 accompanying teachers. Preferably, the school stimulates several teams to conduct research, of which one team is chosen to represent the school.
- Why? It is a fun and educational way to let students share their research with scientists.
- What? You can study anything you want, as long as GLOBE protocols are used. This can be an international protocol were the results have to be uploaded to www.globe.gov, making them available to scientists and schools worldwide. Or the protocols from Globe NL, which you can find on our website. In preparation, you guide the students during the writing of the research report.
Language
All communication is in English, but students that don’t feel confident are allowed to make their research report and presentation in Dutch
Award
The winning team receives a goblet and a mystery prize! Read about the experience of the winning team of the Science Fair 2022.
GLOBE en tto
The Science Fair is interesting for all high schools. For tto-schools the Science Fair offers an interesting CLIL student activity. Furthermore, GLOBE offers various possibilities for both EIO and CLIL. This programme can be used with or without the Science Fair, for various learning objectives.
Participating International Virtual Science Symposium
The same criteria apply to projects for the science fair and the International Virtual Science Symposium (IVSS). If you finish a project before 10 March, upload it not only for the GLOBE Science Fair but also for the IVSS. Your project will then be shared worldwide and you will make a chance to give a presentation at the international GLOBE day (maybe in America!).

What do we expect?
- You as a techer will mentor one or more student teams in doing an empirical research project using one or more GLOBE protocols.
- A team consists of maximally five students. Each school is allowed to send in one team to partake in the GLOBE Science Fair. If you have several eligible teams, it is up to you to decide who will represent your school. A suggestion for selecting the most suitable team would be to organise a Science Fair at your school. Our rubrics can help with the assessment process.
- You ensure the teams upload their research data on the international GLOBE website, in order to make it available for scientists and schools worldwide if international GLOBE-protocols are used.
- You supervise your students in writing a research report.
- You accompany your team to the GLOBE Science Fair. Per team 1 or 2 teachers are allowed to be present.
GLOBE Science Fair

- Helpdesk. You can call or mail us for all your questions.
- Coaching and support. We will proactively ask for your progress to keep you on the right track and help you to resolve any questions.

Lesson plan
Below you can find a short overview of a standard lesson plan, but a teacher can fill it in according to their own preferences.
PHASE I. Introduction by teacher
- Introduction of GLOBE and the Science Fair in class. (1 period). Also use the student webpage for this.
- Students take measurements under the supervision of an accompanying teacher to get a feeling for the research instruments (single or double period).
- Let students brainstorm about a research question and preferably also about developing a research plan (1 or more periods).
PHASE II. Students execute their research in teams
- Teacher offer guidance without interfering.
- Depending on the chosen research and the associated research design, the students will be busy either one day or up to several monts. If students want to compare different soil types, they can do this in one day. However, if they want to follow a development over time, they will need more time.
PHASE III. Students will report on their research
- Students write a research report and upload this this (no later than 31st of May).
- Students will prepare their presentation.
PHASE IV. Students present their results at the Science Fair
GLOBE Science Fair
Toolkit
- There is a seperate webpage for students with an English introduction to the Science Fair: www.globenederland.nl/sciencefairstudents.
- Template: you can use this to plan the Science Fair process.
- You can also look at several examples of research reports.
- During the GLOBE Science Fair we use the same guidelines as during the international GLOBE Virtual Science Symposium. You can find the details in the criteria on which the scientific jury will base their ranking and grading.
- Our rubrics can provide extra guidance.
Upload research reports
Prior to the Science Fair the research report should be uploaded so the results can be shared with the whole worlds. Take note: when you upload your report, the teacher should log in with their GLOBE account or a student should log in with a student account (instructions for creating a student account).
